Ando Brewery: A Historical Miso & Soy Sauce Factory

As landowners and merchants, the Ando family has been a stronghold in the Kakunodate community for over 300 years. The Ando Brewery‘s miso and soy sauce factory is the oldest brick building in northeastern Japan, designated as one of the city’s important cultural assets. Every year, this historical family celebrates the Japanese tradition of Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day). Kabuki figures made from kimono rags and other traditional dolls from the Meiji period (1868-1912) are displayed in the home, where the entire family gathers to celebrate and pray for agricultural prosperity and the well being of female family members. The Hinamatsuri dolls are also displayed for visitors, who are often moved by their beauty and history. One of the oldest families in Akita Prefecture, the Ando family has been in the brewing industry for over 160 years. Their products are additive-free, naturally brewed and 100% handmade. While cultivating their brewing techniques over time, the Andos have adapted their products to suit modern tastes. With expertise and affection, the chief brewer rigorously controls the product quality of the miso, soy sauce and pickles, whose delicate tastes can only be enjoyed at this location. At the Kitaura Main Building, visitors will be delighted by soy sauce-flavored soft ice cream.
