Matsushima’s Oysters

If you’re a mollusk fan, this is the cradle of oyster civilization. Gigantic and voluminous, these palm-sized delicacies are eaten raw, but also maintain their size after being grilled, pan-fried or deep-fried, all popular dishes in Japanese home cooking. Matsushima, alongside Hiroshima, is one of the top two areas in Japan famed for its oysters. Pop by a kakigoya (oyster shack) and treat yourself to a mountain of steamed oysters. The one at the Matsushima Fish Market is all-you-can-eat.
