Niutsuhime Shrine

Founded 1,700 years ago as one of the greatest shrines in the region, World Heritage Site Niutsuhime Shrine is a little gem nestled at the base of Koyasan. Deities of this shrine have been considered to be guardians of Koyasan since it was founded. Before Kobo Daishi  set foot on Koyasan to establish the esoteric Shingon sect of Buddhism, he stopped at Niutsuhime Shrine to offer his prayers. Following in his footsteps, pilgrims to Koyasan always stop to pray at this shrine before starting their ascent to Koyasan. Live music performances are sometimes offered at this unique venue.
