Akita Cedar Craftsmen

Famous for its timber, Akita Prefecture is home to many wood craftsmen, who have a soft spot for Akita cedar. Alongside Aomori cypress and Kiso hinoki cypress, Akita cedar is considered to be one of the top 3 woods in Japan. Leveraging its beautiful grain, magewappa (bent wood) is the most famous traditional craft in Akita. Magewappa absorbs the moisture from rice and maintains the taste even when it becomes cold. The fragrance of the beautifully white Akita cedar also sharpens the appetite. Traditional techniques are combined with modern designs to create products suitable for today’s lifestyle.
