The Shirane Shrine Festival worships Yamato Takeru-no-Mikoto, the son of an ancient emperor who is said to have discovered Kusatsu Hot Springs. Held each year on July 17 & 18 in the Shirane Shrine and the nearby hot spring fields, this festival is the hallmark of Kusatsu summers, with the majority of the locals participating in the festivities. Food & game stalls line the bustling streets, with youngsters of each district carrying mikoshi (portable shrines) around the neighborhood.
The liveliest moment in Kusatsu is during the Hot Spring Thanksgiving Festival, held annually on August 1 & 2. The logal legend says that, by soaking in the hot springs at a particular time on these two days, you will be hale and hearty throughout the year. The festival is also an occasion for locals to give thanks to the hot springs. Three residents are selected to represent mythical characters, who conduct ceremonies to pay respect to the hot springs. Within the resplendence, there is a solemn aspect to the festival, making it the perfect opportunity to enjoy a historic atmosphere in a traditional hot spring town.
