Silky Hot Spring Water

Kusatsu Hot Springs, ranked as one the Top 3 hot springs in Japan, is symbolized by the yubatake (hot spring field) located in the town center. At the source, the temperature ranges between 51 and 95 degrees, making it impossible to use directly for baths. Traditionally, six-foot boards are used to “massage” the hot spring water in order to cool it down to a temperature appropriate for bathing. Massaging the hot spring water not only brings down the temperature, but also gives the water texture a unique silky quality.
