Erwin Bälz

Erwin Bälz was a German medical scientist who made significant contributions to Japanese medicine. Working as a medical professor at Tokyo University, he also served as family physician to the Meiji Emperor and Prince. Professor Bälz visited Kusatsu several times from 1878 and analyzed the hot spring water. He not only instructed locals on the best way to bathe, but also promoted Kusatsu’s alpine hot spring water as unparalleled, raising it to global standards. The Bälz Museum introduces his achievements with photos and materials.
