Go for a Walk along Mikuni Road

sub_hoshionsen_5_01

Behind Chojyukan Ryokan lies a mountain road to the Mikuni Toge (Mountain Pass) which used to be the main road connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Echigo province (Niigata). From spring to autumn, this road is open to walkers. Along the route, about 15 minutes from the start, you will find Aizome Waterfall, 30 metres high. Lining the route are many tiny white and yellow flowers, and in cherry blossom season, blooming pink and white azaleas can be found. After the waterfall, a pleasant mountain trail greets you with beeches and Mongolian oaks. If you have the energy, continue across the many bridges until you reach the top of Mt. Mikuni, which takes about an hour and a half to complete. In early summer, you can admire the fields of orange-yellow day-lilies as far as the eye can see.
